Middle school is often where students either coast on autonomy or get lost in it. We do neither.
At Cambridge, Grades 7 and 8 are treated as a deliberate bridge — not a holding pattern before high school, and not simply "advanced elementary."
Students are given real responsibility, real academic challenge, and real leadership opportunities, all while our teacher counsellors keep a close eye on how each student is adapting.
Reach Ahead: Getting a Head Start
Our Reach Ahead program allows qualifying Grade 8 students to take Grade 9 high school credit courses — often in Math, French, or English — while still finishing out their middle school year. It's a low-pressure way to test high school-level pace and expectations early, so the actual transition to Grade 9 feels familiar rather than intimidating. Eligibility is based on teacher recommendation and academic readiness, keeping the challenge appropriately matched to each student.
Leadership Beyond the Classroom
Grades 7 and 8 are when students start leading rather than just participating. Through Student Council, students take on real responsibility — planning events, representing peers, and managing initiatives from start to finish. Our students are also active in building our Newsletters and Yearbook, while also taking on critical roles in on yearly Drama Productions.
Character and Consistency, Carried Forward
The habits built in elementary don't disappear here — they mature. Students continue with mandatory weekly clubs (one academic, one athletic), ongoing monthly field trips, and the same weekly, detailed student reports parents have relied on since Grade 1. What changes is the level of independence expected: students are trusted with more, and given the structure to rise to it.
Strong Parent Partnership
The transition years are exactly when parents need the clearest visibility — and that's what we provide. Families stay connected through monthly Parent Council meetings, real-time updates via the Remind App, and our monthly Family Newsletter, ensuring no parent feels out of the loop as their child takes on more independence.
Ready for What's Next
By the end of Grade 8, Cambridge students aren't just ready for high school — many have already started it. Between Reach Ahead credits, competition experience, and real leadership roles, students move into Grade 9 with a head start most peers spend their entire first year trying to catch up to.
